The P-51 Mustang was arguably the best operational piston-engined fighter ever built. With P-51s providing long-range escort, US heavy bombers could carry the war into the heart of the Third Reich with acceptable losses. Thus, the P-51 can justifiably claim its title as the fighter that won the war.
This version is from the 352th Fighter Group, 487th Fighter Squadron, 8th USA Air Force, 1944. Unit 414151 'Petie 2nd', Lt. Col. John C. Meyer.
